With rising demand for qualified childcare professionals across British Columbia, a career as an Early Childhood Education Assistant (ECEA) offers a fulfilling and stable future. Whether you’re passionate about working with young children, exploring a new career path, or re-entering the workforce, Heritage Community College (HCC) is here to support your journey.

We are proud to offer a flexible and accessible learning pathway that helps students meet the educational requirements needed to apply for ECEA certification through the BC ECE Registry. Our online, short-duration training programs are designed for people who want to start working in early learning settings without committing to a full-time diploma.

What Is an Early Childhood Education Assistant (ECEA)?

An ECEA works under the supervision of certified Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) in licensed childcare facilities, supporting children in their formative years. These professionals assist with activities, ensure safety, promote emotional and social development, and contribute to a positive learning environment for children aged 0 to 5 years.

In British Columbia, anyone wishing to work in this role must be certified by the ECE Registry, a provincial body that governs early childhood education standards.

HCC’s Education-Based ECEA Pathway

Heritage Community College has developed a set of introductory online programs that are designed to meet the educational component required for applying to become an ECE Assistant in British Columbia.

These courses are fully online, making them ideal for students who need flexible scheduling. Each program is just 45 hours in length, allowing you to complete the training in a short amount of time—even while working or managing other responsibilities.

Our curriculum introduces students to:

  • Child growth and development fundamentals
  • Emotional, cognitive, and physical development in early years
  • Positive behavior guidance techniques
  • Strategies for inclusive early learning
  • Observation, communication, and classroom support skills

Upon completion, students receive certificates of completion which can be submitted to the BC ECE Registry as part of their ECEA certification application. While Heritage Community College does not issue ECEA certification, our training is designed to help fulfill one of the key eligibility requirements set by the provincial registry.

Fast-Track to Career Entry

Completing the full series of recommended training can be done in a few months or less, depending on your pace.

Once finished, you’ll be better prepared to:

  • Support certified educators in licensed childcare facilities
  • Understand and guide young children’s development
  • Begin the application process for ECEA certification with confidence

Preparing for Certification: What You Need to Know

The BC ECE Registry requires applicants for ECEA certification to complete a minimum of two post-secondary course in early childhood education (typically in child development or guidance). HCC’s training programs are built to fulfill this requirement.

After completing your courses at HCC, you’ll need to:

  • Submit your certificates of completion to the BC ECE Registry
  • Provide supporting documents like ID and references
  • Complete a criminal record check
  • Fill out the official application form

Our admissions and academic advising teams are here to help you understand the application process and guide you every step of the way.

Please note: The ECEA certification is granted only by the BC ECE Registry. Heritage Community College does not issue certifications or licenses—we provide the education component required for your application.
