What Is an Early Childhood Education Assistant (ECEA)?

An ECEA works under the supervision of certified Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) in licensed childcare facilities, supporting children in their formative years. These professionals assist with activities, ensure safety, promote emotional and social development, and contribute to a positive learning environment for children aged 0 to 5 years.

In British Columbia, anyone wishing to work in this role must be certified by the ECE Registry, a provincial body that governs early childhood education standards.

HCC’s Education-Based ECEA Pathway

Heritage Community College has developed a set of introductory online programs that are designed to meet the educational component required for applying to become an ECE Assistant in British Columbia.

These courses are fully online, making them ideal for students who need flexible scheduling. Each program is just 45 hours in length, allowing you to complete the training in a short amount of time—even while working or managing other responsibilities.
Our curriculum introduces students to:

• Child growth and development fundamentals
• Emotional, cognitive, and physical development in early years
• Positive behavior guidance techniques
• Strategies for inclusive early learning
• Observation, communication, and classroom support skills

Upon completion, students receive certificates of completion which can be submitted to the BC ECE Registry as part of their ECEA certification application. While Heritage Community College does not issue ECEA certification, our training is designed to help fulfill one of the key eligibility requirements set by the provincial registry.
